                              : grounds of the Astronomic Observatory of
                              : University of Porto at Monte da Virgem-
                              : Vila Nova de Gaia.Monte da Virgem is a
                              : granitic hill located on the left bank of
                              : Douro River facing Oporto. The rock, an
                              : alkaline granite,is Variscan in age
                              : (upper Carboniferous,315 My old) and
                              : belongs to the 'Granito do Porto' plutonic
                              : body.The station is emplaced on a set of
                              : outcrops that present close jointing. The
                              : joints belong to 4 families that trend N50E,
                              : N72E, N20W and N50W and are mostly vertical.
                              : The spacing of the joints varies from 5 to
                              : 40 cm. The rock is somewhat weathered.
                              : Although it is on a flat platform close
                              : to the 90-m high cliffs of Douro River
                              : it is geologically stable.
